Details of Distance Education:

Distance learning basically means imparting education to students who are not present physically in a classroom.
Students are not able to attend school in person as they are "separated by time and distance".

Distance education/Correspondence courses in India are very popular as these provide one a comfort level of studying at one's own pace and will. These are mostly pursued by working professionals who do not have the time to go for regular classes. With the growth of technology, the study material of these courses is being provided through Internet, Television and Radio. However, these Courses have lesser value than the Regular Courses.

Online Courses - in India are still in their budding stage. These Courses are all most similar to distance education in terms of study approach.

The only difference is that, most of the study in these courses are done through internet in the form of virtual classrooms. Thus these courses are also known as 'E-Learning (electronic learning) Courses'. There are very few Institutes which provide such courses in India.

Distance Education System in India

In India the first Open University started operating in the year 1982. The concept of distance learning in India is rapidly gaining pace in recent times. Distance learning is of 2 types -

1. Open system
2. Regular system

Open system - no formal qualification is required if you want to pursue a course. However, few institutions that offer open system of distance education require a student to have attained at least 18 years of age for admission into bachelor programs and 21 years in case of a post graduate program.

Regular system - the eligibility criteria for seeking admission into a distance learning program is same as in case of a classroom academic program. Few universities require students to qualify in a written test.

• Work as you study - If you are a working individual, you can pursue your studies while you work. This is because distance learning doesn't require you to commute. As such you can continue with your job as you study.
• Expenses are meager - The only expense you have to incur on distance learning is on the study material and the examination cost at the end of the semesters. You save not only money but also time in distance learning.
