Define/ what is environmental engineering - is monitoring, improvement, & protection of the environment through design. We can als o describe as “an emerging branch of study in engineering that applies the knowledge of science and engineering principles to improve the environment or ecosystem/ living environment (air, water, and/or land resources) from pollution and to provide healthy water, air and land for human habitation and for other organisms”.

It takes a quantitative and interdisciplinary approach to examining ecosystems and covers issues such as conservation, biodiversity, soil contamination, groundwater contamination, climate change, water quality, waste management, sustainable development and natural resources, and air and noise pollution

Details of environmental engineering

  • Numerous fields can be pursued within the larger framework of environmental engineering, including  biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, environmental law, public health, chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, civil  and mechanical engineering.
  • Using the principles of biology and chemistry, environmental engineers develop solutions to environmental problems.
  • They are involved in water and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues. Environmental engineers conduct hazardous-waste management studies in which they evaluate the significance of the hazard, offer analysis on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps.
  • They design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems. They conduct research on proposed environmental projects, analyze scientific data, and perform quality control checks. They provide legal and financial consulting on matters related to the environment.
  • Environmental engineers are concerned with local and worldwide environmental issues. They study and attempt to minimize the effects of acid rain, global warming, automobile emissions, and ozone depletion. They also are involved in the protection of wildlife.

The specializations in environmental engineering includes the areas like

  • Water Supply & Waste Water Treatment Engineering
  • Air Pollution Control Engineering
  • Noise Pollution Control Engineering
  • Natural Resources Engineering
  • Risk Assessment Engineering inc
  • Bio energy production and bio remediation
  • Solid waste management
  • Ecopreneering - Eco-building, Eco - village, Eco - products

Skill requirement for Environmental engineers

  • Active listening, reading comprehension, critical thinking, active learning, complex problem solving, Judgment and decision making,  operations analysis, time management

Career in Environmental engineering

  • In the wake of the recent disasters, Environmental Engineering has become one of the most sought after careers
  • They can be employed in government departments like Forest and Environment, Urban Planning, Pollution Control Boards, Water resources and Agriculture and other industries.
  • Many refineries, waste treatment industries, distilleries, fertilizer plants, mines, textile mills and various food processing industries also hire environmental engineers
  • The environmental engineers who may not be interested in technical sector can take up research work. Others may teach in various institutions having Environmental Engineering as a course. Another interesting career can be that of an Environment journalist in different channels like Discovery channel and National Geographic Channel etc.
  • Environmental engineers are strongly encouraged to become Licensed Professional Engineers. Requirements for this licensure vary from state to state, but typically involve:
    • graduation from an accredited engineering program,
    • work experience, and
    • completion of two examinations - Fundamentals of engineering and Principles and Practice of engineering

Followings are some of the employers in this field:

AECOM, Privi Organics Limited, MACTEC, UEM GROUP, Kalpan Hydro Company, Goodrich Corporation, SPML Infra Limited, Brunel India Pvt Ltd, The Indure Private Limited, Sima Labs Pvt Ltd., IDS Group, Dresser-Rand India Pvt Ltd
